Acquisition and Rate Building

There are two phases in learning:

Acquisition - When a student is beginning unfamiliar material

Rate Building - When the student has acquired a basic understanding of the material then the focus is on rate building which leads to fluency and mastery

My Learning Partners uses clearly defined criteria that guide the focus of instruction toward acquisition or rate building activities. These criteria for Reading, Written Language and Math are shown below:

Math	15 correct responses or less	More than 15 correct responses
Written Language: Spelling Sentences	Less than half of the Letter Writing Test score	More than half the Letter Writing Test score
Written Language: Copying Sentences	Acquisition and fluency occur in parallel. This area is not dependent on a score to change from one phase to the other.
Written Language: Spelling Through Morphographs	Acquisition and fluency occur in parallel. This area is not dependent on a score to change from one phase to the other.
